After the debacle of trying to dive in a dry suit yesterday, I thought I deserved a trip out to the Blue Lagoon to swim in their milky blue water full of silica and nice warm water. I was able to get transport for 5:30 pick up at my guesthouse. This pickup service of Reykjavik works fairly well, IF you are close to the activity or close to the bus station. Most times I have been picked up almost last and dropped off almost first. The van that comes for you takes you to the bus station and you then get onto a large bus with other people collected from around the city.
Blue Lagoon is about 40 minutes outside of Reykjavik, closer to the airport than the city. When we reach the site, you give them your ticket and get an arm bracelet that lets you into the locker rooms and lets you put your things into a locker, and lets you get a drink or food up to 3000 ISK (about $27) that you can pay on your way out of the facility. it does all this with a chip that you just press against the sensor.
I do everything to get ready to go into the lagoon and head for the water. It is very nice and warm. In the middle of the very large pool is a geyser that is spouting steam and boiling hot water into the lagoon. You can get close but not stay long as it is really very hot. There are also stations where you can put this silica onto your face and give yourself a nice facial by letting it dry. supposedly it makes your skin nice and smooth but I could not really tell. A whole lot of people should have smooth skin today though, men and women alike, because there were a lot of white silica faces bobbing around in the pool last night. There are also steam rooms which I love so I spent a bit of time in them. And a waterfall that gives you a beating if you stand under it but it stings your eyes and tastes terrible should you get it in your mouth and it's almost impossible to avoid getting some in your mouth.
Spent about 1 1/2 hours in the pool/steam room/waterfall then had to leave to catch the bus back to Reykjavik. I had conditioned my hair as suggested before I got into the pool and again after I got out but I didn't do it enough. My hair was like bad straw by the time it was dry that evening. You would think I would sleep well after that but I was itchy all night in spite of the long shower I had when getting out of the lagoon.
In the photo is the hot geyser in the middle of the lagoon with bobbing heads around it.
