Came in on the train today and also had a bus ride so had plenty of time to have a look at the countryside. It was fairly easy to ascertain why Poland has been so desired in the past by various countries/dynasties/czars/rulers. We passed miles and miles of good farmland. By now the harvest is finished but we did see farmers plowing under the chafe and bits to get the land ready for the spring.
After the farmlands, we passed through many small towns and hamlets and villages. The houses were quite pretty with flowers in the windows and nicely painted. Two things stood out. The roofs were very, very steep which means to us that there is a lot of snow in the winter that needs to slide off the roof. The second was that every house seemed to have about 3 cubic meters of firewood stacked beside it or in the backyard. Again, this must mean that there are some very cold winters. Kind of glad we are not here in the winter.
